THE MAN ON THE TRAIN
By Lucy Maud Montgomery
Grandma Sheldon received a telegram from his son, William George, who lived in Green village. He told that his wife, Delia, was seriously ill. He wanted his mom to come because his wife told that there was no one who could nurse her as well as grandma. After knowing what had happened with her daughter in law, she was very worried. She wanted to go there soon, but there was no one who could accompany her. At that time, she was at home with her grandchildren, Cyrus and Louise. Instead of forbidding their grandma to have a long journey, Cyrus and Louise said that grandma had to go because Aunt Delia needed her. They drove her to the station early in the morning. In the bottom of her heart, grandma was very afraid of being away alone. She was so afraid of everything that she decided not to bring any money at all.
At the fifth station, there was a man got on the train and sat beside her. He was clean-shaven and there was oddly shaped scar on his forehead. After a few minutes, they began to have conversation till the conductor came to asked the ticket. Grandma was very nervous because she couldn't find her ticket. Fortunately, that man helped her to buy a new one and also accompanied her to reach William’s house. Three weeks later, William brought a newspaper which had a picture of a man who accompanied his mom a few days ago. Grandma was very surprised because the man who helped her on the train was Mark Hartwell the murderer of Amos Gray. Instead of having hate feeling, grandma told her son that she loved Mark very much. Every Christmas, she sent him a token. The police said to her that he always cried when he received Grandma’s card.
